The Reverend William H. Gattis
Academy for Leadership Excellence
Over the past 45 years of ministry in the Conference of the UMC, perhaps my greatest joy has been seeing the empowerment of both laity and clergy for their unique ministry and witness. From serving as pastor of a variety of local congregations (e.g., rural charges, suburban, small town, downtown, and university community), plus serving on Conference staff, and more recently District Superintendent, all have born witness to the value of transformative leadership for growing disciples of Jesus Christ and His church. We acknowledge today there is a renewed urgency to reclaim our missional nature as Christians. As United Methodists, we draw upon our Wesleyan heritage to connect, by grace, to all our neighbors. It is in that hope that through learning and leading alongside spiritually deepening, we might reach farther and congregations might be both relevant and contextual to serve where they are planted. Whether it is by coaching individuals, consulting with congregations, or discerning with others where God is prompting and leading, it all makes my life sing with purposefulness and delight. It is with that passion and challenge that I approach the position as Executive Director of the Academy for Leadership Excellence. I yearn to know and have conversations with all who wish to join the Academy community in support of its vision to equip and empower Christ centered leaders for service through the Church to the world.
